On Thursday, May 19th, 2011 Paso Robles is the host city for Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California, the largest spectator sport in the United States, witnessed live by over a million spectators each year.
The Stage 5 finish line in Paso Robles is planning for approximately 20,000 people to line the course and cheer on some of the greatest cyclists in the world, and plans are under way to make sure everyone has a great time.
The race brings with it a Lifestyle Festival that is located at the finish line in the downtown city park and serves as the heart of the event. The festival is free to the public and offers cycling and health-related booths, live race viewing on big-screen TVs, an entertainment stage, a beer garden with a live band, VIP viewing areas, a “Kid’s Zone" with inflatable climbing elements, clowns, face painting and more. The festival is open from 11a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on race day and features a bike valet for those who prefer to ride their bike to the race. The riders are expected to cross the finish line any time between 2:45 and 3:45 p.m.
A number of activities occur on race day to ensure that everyone can get involved. In addition to the fun the Lifestyle Festival brings, high-level recreational cyclists can participate in the Fantasy Ride, a 28 mile circuit race that starts and ends at the ATOC Finish Line. There will also be Kids Bike Races and the “Breakaway from Cancer” walk. All of these events happen at the finish line area of the race course in the hours preceding the arrival of the professional cyclists.
The day promises to be filled with excitement for spectators of all ages, and we invite you to come down to the park, or anywhere along the course that suits you, and watch the race. It’s not often that you get to see world-class athletes up close in Paso Robles.
And don’t forget, the 29th Annual Paso Robles Wine Festival kicks off on May 20th, so you can “Come for the race and stay for the wine!”
See you in Paso Robles on May 19th!
