Haunted Hotel Dinner Tour

If you’re like me, you too might have wondered if ghosts are real. I’ve always been fascinated by stories of hauntings, and love to rub against the edge of what separates common sense from fanciful fiction.

Providence smiled dearly upon me this fall (or was it perhaps a friendly ghost pulling some strings…) as I’ve been invited into one of my favorite “haunts” to probe, explore and discover the Secrets of the Paso Robles Inn! From visiting rooms that are supposedly haunted to trips down in to the bowels of the property, all while having the luxury to sort through and experience the reclaimed treasures excavated over the years – this has been an amazing oddesy of discovery.

Being the lucky owner of Central Coast Food Tours, I just had to give in to my lust for adventure, intrigue and the unknown and pull together a tour to share all I’ve learned about the Paso Robles Inn! 

So, In homage to the town of Paso Robles' 125th anniversary celebration, I’ve dredged up the lively history of this little town to share some of the more interesting tales of it's past. Not surprisingly, it all begins on the grounds of the Historic Paso Robles Inn. From 1864 as the busy stagecoach stop, to the 1891 hostelry for the rich and famous, to its current incarnation as the Paso Robles Inn, you'll learn all about the Inn's history and its hauntings, view their scrapbooks and photo albums, and touch real artifacts unearthed when the 1942 Inn was built. 

Among all this fun, you'll be hosted at a special dinner just for tour guests at the Inn's noted Steakhouse. What's for dinner? Bloody good prime rib, of course! You'll enjoy this specially hosted full-service dinner along with 2 glasses of local Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon.

Inaugural Ravine 5k Mud Run and Music Festival in Paso Robles

The Inaugural Ravine 5k Mud Run is a competitor and family friendly mud/ challenge course that will traverse over natural and man-made obstacles throughout the property of The Ravine Waterpark in Paso Robles. In total, there are over twelve obstacles. The kid's course is a six obstacle mud run which is sure to go down in the memory books!

The highlight of the race is the 150 yard "race against the river" portion, which pits entrants against the current of the Lazy River.

Three waves of runners will compete:

1) Adult/Competitor
2)Junior
3) The "805" Wave, sponsored by Firestone Brewery, for the sobriety challenged.

Ravine will be hosting a post-race party which is free to all spectators and participants. There will be wines from Sextant Winery and beer from Firestone Brewery along with three concert venues which will feature a total of six bands. Local non-profits will retain part of proceeds. Have an adventure (or not!) at Lake Nacimiento

Summer days in Paso Robles can get warm and when they do, smart people head to the water.

A favorite attraction for locals and visitors who love to take part in outdoor recreation is Lake Nacimiento, about 20 minutes west of Paso Robles.

One of the best things about the lake is that it's large enough that you can seek out and find whatever type of lake day you're looking for. You can camp, ski, tube, wakeboard, fish, cruise, sunbathe or just sit in a cove in the shade and play cards.

The fact is, most seasoned lake-goers do a combination of all of the above on any given day at Lake Nacimiento, which is why it's such a popular destination.

Family-Friendly Paso Robles, Part 8: Santa Margarita Ziplines

This is part eight in a series from guest blogger Zane Thormodsgaard, who impressed local marketing experts with his fourth grade social studies report on Paso Robles and was invited to enjoy the family-friendly attractions in Paso Robles firsthand and report out on his experiences.

If you are a thrill seeker, come to the Santa Margarita zip line (www.margarita-adventures.com)! You might think you just zip line, but you also get a tour through their land on your way to the zip line.  Our tour guide Willie was awesome!  He was funny and informative. 

The property includes a vineyard and ranch.  We saw a lot of animals including a huge bull, some cows and fawns.  There were also many types of birds, including vultures, owls, magpies and hawks. 

The ranch is as big as 160 Disneylands!  It was amazing.  I loved learning about it.

We finally reached the top of the mountain and we were ready to zip line.  When I looked over the   cliff, I was so nervous my hands were shaking!  But as soon as I jumped, I was relieved! 

I zipped through, but when I looked down, I thought I must have been 100,000,000 feet in the air. 

The first zip line was the longest and had the steepest drop.  The next one was shorter, but just as exciting! On the third course, you get a running start, then jump off into mid-air.  On the fourth course, they give you a bean bag and you have to try and throw it into a bucket for a prize!  None of my family made it however. I had so much fun!  

I would recommend you go the Santa Margarita Ranch Zip Line after they have finished building the fifth one that is even bigger and faster than the other ones!

Family-Friendly Paso Robles, Part 1: Ravine Waterpark, by Zane, Age 10

A school project on Paso Robles turns into a journalist familiarization tour for a Southern California fifth grader.

Last year we were contacted by a 4^th grader from Manhattan Beach, named Zane Thormodsgaard, looking for information for a report on Paso Robles. We sent him some information on the area, he got an A on his report and we struck up a relationship with him and his family along the way.

We wanted Zane to experience first-hand all of the things he wrote about in his report, so we invited him back as a guest journalist to cover a summer family adventure in Paso Robles. 

He arrived on June 22^nd and spent the weekend exploring some of the the kid-friendly attractions in the area. He will be sharing his impressions of each experience on our our blog. Here is Zane's first installment:

I just visited the amazing Ravine Water Park in Paso Robles, California. 

The park was so much fun and family-friendly!  A kid named Kyle even let me cut him in the line so I  could race down the tube with my brother.  The Ravine Water Park is a very exciting and welcoming place. 

My favorite ride was “The Toilet Bowl.”  What does the ride do, you might ask?  Well, it is a crazy-cool ride with a cone-shaped drop at the end.  I whizzed down the toilet bowl (no pun intended) as my heart raced out of my chest!  Unfortunately, my head kept bumping on the slide since I didn’t listen to much of the instructions because I was so excited.  I recommend you follow the lifeguard’s directions to tuck your chin as you ride. 

I hope you have as much fun as I did when you visit the Ravine Water Park.

Get Down and Dirty on the Central Coast with MORE Wildflower

Living in California’s scenic central coast inevitably results in a great appreciation for nature. You  would be hard-pressed to find people who understand this better than the staff of Tri-California Events, the company that organizes the famous Wildflower Triathlons every year at Lake San Antonio.

After 30 years of Wildflower, Tri-California wanted to create more opportunities to spend time  outdoors, and more ways to promote health and fitness in a fun, social atmosphere. The answer? A brand new event called MORE Wildflower (clever, right?). MORE stands for Mud, Obstacle, Run, Entertainment. Taking place on April 27 (the weekend before Wildflower) at the same beautiful venue, MORE is a four-mile obstacle course that will require participants to go over, under, and through 14 obstacles, getting seriously dirty along the way. What better way to bond with nature than covering yourself in it from head to toe?

Mud obstacle courses have emerged as the new trend in the world of outdoor fitness. Popular events such as Tough Mudder, Muddy Buddy, and The Color Run have taken the U.S. by storm, and are now being held in cities across the nation. Tri-California’s goal is to combine the aspects of these events into a day full of outdoor adventure and family-friendly fun at the gorgeous Lake San Antonio, a 45 minute drive northwest of Paso Robles.

Keeping the traditions established by the aforementioned mud events, MORE will promote teamwork and cooperation, encouraging participants to form teams of four. Like in triathlons, the true victory is in finishing, regardless of how many people did so before you did (but it would still be pretty darn cool to finish first).

Not feeling up to getting down and dirty? No problem. In addition to the race, Tri-California and the Monterey County Parks Department will provide entertainment and activities such as kayak and stand up paddle board rentals, live music, a beer garden, as well as other food and beverages.

The parks department is dedicated to promoting outdoor activities and providing the public with recreational facilities. Lake San Antonio is revered in the athletic community for its capacity to cater to runners and cyclists. Mile markers remain in the park year-round, and the roads are well-paved. And did I mention that the scenery is spectacular?

Walk the Culinary Streets of Paso Robles with Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast

Runners and foodies get ready to play in San Luis Obispo County throughout the SLO Marathon weekend.

As part of the SLO Marathon weekend, Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast has teamed up to host four exclusive Adventure Tours. This is the first SAVOR has offered these popular tours outside of the event weekend held annually each September. These exclusive tours give guests an inside look into the people and place that are special to San Luis Obispo County. You get to play local for the day.

Taking to the culinary streets of Paso Robles to a behind the scenes tour of Hearst Castle or playing pastry chef at the Madonna Inn and discovering SLO Wine Country, the SAVOR Adventure Tours have something for everyone.

Highlighting the town’s farm to table and vine to bottle way of life, the Paso Robles Adventure Tour will guide guests through the culinary streets of Downtown Paso Robles. Led by Laura Gurreau of Central Coast Food Tours, guests will enjoy a mix of food and wine tastings at four venues that best represent the array of agricultural, culinary and viticulture resources the area is so well known. Along with tantalizing the palate guests will learn the vast history of this quaint town and how it has come to be a new culinary frontier

The walking tour will begin at Thomas Hill Organics where guests will enjoy a farm fresh salad paired with wine from Calcareous Vineyard. The next stop takes guests through the Paso Robles City Park to the outdoor patio of the Paso Robles Inn and Steakhouse. Here the group will delight in the Inn’s famous Prime Rib Sandwich paired with Cabernet Sauvignon from Liberty School while tunes of a local musician fill the air. Following this delicious pairing, guests will head into the Inn's gardens for a tour and stories of its 160 year history. Then off to Estrella Restaurant for an assortment of tapas and full glasses of their trademark Sangria. The tour will come to a close at Panolivo Bistro for specially prepared petit fours and robust, fresh coffee.
